Barbara S. Beidleman (fondly called "Brown Sugar") was born in Bristol, Virginia on February 23, 1938, and departed this world on Sunday, January 22, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Peyton Y. and Ada B. Montgomery Smith.

Barbara was a graduate of Douglass High school where she met and married the late David Daniel Hughes. To this union was born four children: David Y. Hughes, Syrilda H. Heath (Ronald), Michael D. Hughes (Vette), and Gloria B. Carter (Tim). All of her children readily agree that she "Exceeded Expectations" as a mother, nurturer, friend, and Christian role model.

After the birth of her children, Barbara received her Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Intermont College and her Master's Degree from Grand Canyon University. She then dedicated numerous years to the education of children from Head Start to High School.

Barbara married the late Martin McDonald Beidleman. Although they shared no children, Mack had three: Mack Jr., Stanley, and Renee.

Barbara became a member of New Hope Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully because she truly loved the Lord and her church. She served as various Sunday school officers, Educational Leader for BTU, usher, and member of the Pastor's Aide, Women's Choir, Senior Choir, Combined Choir, and Women's Mission Ministries. In addition, Barbara served in the Schaffer Memorial Baptist District Association. Because of her dedication to her church, Barbara was honored as a Mother of the church and was respectfully called Mother Beidleman. Even though she served faithfully, Mother Beidleman was quick to say "If I had 1,000 tongues, I couldn't thank Him enough."

Barbara is preceded in death by three sisters: Ada "Pat" Black, Lillie "Penny" Brown, and Pamela Martin Pope, and two brothers: Peyton Smith and Alford Smith.

In addition to her children, she is survived by one brother, John H. Smith; three sisters-in-law, Callie "Cookie" Smith, Barbara Cox Smith, and Barbara Lewis; one brother-in-law, Allen Knox Hughes; five grandchildren, David, Aja (Brian), Chris, Travis, and Ashley (Ray); and seven great-grandchildren, Gracie, Cassie, Destiny, Will, Tyoni, Madison, and Ray. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.
