Prince A. Coleman, 93, of Glade Springs, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at The Waters Nursing Home in Blountville, Tennessee.
Prince was born in Meadowview, Virginia, on March 2, 1933. He attended Douglass High School, where he excelled as a student-athlete. He played football and basketball, served on student council, and received four college offers before he ultimately decided to attend Morristown College. He then proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Prince played basketball for the Navy and won the championship game in the summer of 1954. His service took him around the world, allowing him to visit many places, and he remained a proud Navy veteran throughout his life.
Prince married Marjorie Ann McNichlos and eventually settled in Glade Springs, Virginia. He worked for Appalachian Power Company until retirement. He was an avid Virginia Tech fan; Prince also gave his time to coaching and organizing Little League Baseball and enjoyed traveling with his close friend, Charlie Byrd.
Throughout his life, Prince wore many hats and served in many capacities. He was known in the area for helping repair many a home and for sharing his wood carpentry skills with friends and family. After retirement, he dedicated himself to the community, serving on the Washington County Board of Supervisors, Washington County Service Authority, and two terms as the Vice Mayor on the Glade Springs Town Council. He was also widely known for his work with Habitat for Humanity. Prince’s service to others earned him the Hope Award from Emory and Henry College, along with numerous lifetime achievements illuminating his acts of service and knowledge.
By the end of Prince’s life, countless people knew his name as one that stood for a good man, a life well lived, and a hand they were proud to have shaken.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Issac & Roxanne Milliner Coleman; his wife, Marjorie Ann Coleman; grandson, Gary Wayne Coleman Jr.; siblings, Mary (Hugh) Carter, Irene Wells, Evelyn Campbell, Sarah Gammon, Marvin Coleman, Willie Mack Coleman, Jim Coleman, Bill Coleman, and Dave Coleman; daughter-in-law, Gloria Coleman; and lifelong best friend, Charles Byrd.
