Obituary

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend went to be with the Lord on Friday December 29th, 2017 at the age of 75 after being admitted to the Bristol Welmont Hospital.Roberta was born June 18th, 1942 to the late Francis Clarissa Clay Anderson in Bristol, Virginia. Roberta was a member of the Lee Street Baptist Church. Roberta served the Lord as a member of the Woman's Missionary Society, Young Matron's Auxiliary, Senior Choir, Women's Choir, Order of Eastern Star No. 58, various youth circles and on occasion sang with the Martin Luther King mass choir. Roberta played the piano for the Youth Choir and various times for the Vacation Bible School. Roberta was a graduate of Douglass High School (1960) and Morristown College.Roberta worked for Beecham Pharmaceutical, Fingerhut, Boys &Girls Club in Bristol, Virginia and in the earlier days she worked in various downtown clothing stores.Roberta was preceded in death by her grandparents William H. and Callie Clay; daughter, Allison Denise Hughes; aunt, Lois Clay Carrington; uncles, Henry Morrison Clay, William Sawyer Clay, Monroe Clay; and in-laws, Jack Hughes, Bettye Jo Hughes, David Hughes, and Jean Hughes.Roberta is survived by her devoted husband, Allen Hughes Sr.; son, Allen Hughes Jr.; daughter, Robin Clarissa Hughes (Richmond, Va.); three grandchildren, Derek, Deon, Donovan; and one sister in law, Barbara Lewis. Roberta will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and associates.
